Objective

Imperial College London in partnership with Rockhopper TV developed a groundbreaking new series on global health that was broadcast on BBC World News from October 2008. Cosmo, in partnership with a global affiliate, was tasked to reach out to policy makers and donors to encourage an increase in resources allocated to global health.

Strategic Approach

Cosmo developed a program that identified key opinion leaders and assessed their attitude towards overseas development assistance, and partnered with NGOs to establish a discourse on the issue of developing sustained investments in tackling global health issues.

A high-profile panel featuring prominent spokespeople, including a former advisor to the Japanese Cabinet and Aiko Doden, a senior correspondent at NHK, was put together at a preview screening of the documentaries. The British Embassy in Tokyo was chosen at the venue, adding an additional element of support.

Impact

The screening was attended by 28 NGO representatives, 26 government officials, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and JICA, ambassadors from Bangladesh, Rwanda, and The Republic of Niger, in addition to journalists from national dailies, newswires, medical and professional publications. A news article in a national daily on November 28, Prime Minister Aso Taro stressed the need to boost Japan’s official overseas development assistance (ODA).
